BIOGRAPHY

Born in central New Jersey in 1985, Rita has been surrounded by art for as long as she has been in the woods, which is before she can remember. When she decided to pursue painting at the University of Pennsylvania, the symbiotic relationship that her upbringing created between the environment and her art became clear. Although she spent much of her undergraduate career designing, constructing, and painting scenery for various theatrical productions, the isolation of the studio and intimacy of the two-dimensional canvas remained most appealing to her. In her final year at Penn, Rita began her Tree Shadow Series, a body of work simultaneously representational and abstract; true to her love of nature but indulgent in her desire to explore the possibilities of pigment.
As a recent graduate, Rita is working as a freelance scenic painter and artist. As much as she enjoys the theatre, however, her passion remains focused on her work; she continues to be inspired by organic forms and is excited to investigate their influence within the unpredictability of her own artistic growth.
